This webinar will support teachers to have conversations in the classroom about bereavement that may arise due to the pandemic.

The implications of COVID 19 has touched everyone in our society. We have all experienced a variety of losses, from the loss of physical connection with our loved ones, loss of employment to the death of someone close. Children have had limited contact with their friends, missed out on the social interaction that school provides and some have experienced the death of grandparents, parents or other relatives.

Bereavement can impact hugely on the emotional and social wellbeing of the child and on their ability to concentrate and conduct their studies. Teachers are important in the lives of children and children spend a significant portion of the day at school. They are in a unique position to provide positive support to bereaved children in the classroom.

The Irish Childhood Bereavement Network and Irish Hospice Foundation are hosting this webinar as part of their webinar series on bereavement during COVID-19. This webinar will support teachers to have conversations and respond to questions and concerns which will arise when schools open – in particular the implications the pandemic may have had on the bereavement experience of children.

The webinar will provide:

  • Information about how bereavement can affect children, particularly how it can impact behaviour and performance in the classroom
  • Guidance and practical support to help teachers have conversations with children about death, dying and bereavement

Speakers

The speakers will include members of the ICBN Advisory Panel:
Dr Aoife Lynam, Head of Research School of Education (Primary) Hibernia College
Gina Cantillon, National Project Leader, Barnardos Children’s Bereavement Service

Time will be allocated to answer questions from the audience. Please submit your questions in advance by email to maura.keating@hospicefoundation.ie

A comprehensive resource pack for schools will be emailed to all attendees after the webinar.

About Irish Hospice Foundation (IHF)

Irish Hospice Foundation are a national charity dedicated to all matters relating to dying, death and bereavement in Ireland. We work to ensure that no-one will face death or bereavement without the care and support they need regardless of the place of death. For the past thirty years, we have been working in partnership with others to make excellence in bereavement care a national priority. We do this through many of our activities such as, awareness-raising, training and education, providing bereavement information and working collaboratively with many organisations, both state and voluntary, to enhance bereavement care provision in Ireland.
